Decking, Framing, Custom Railing
Before: Dated exposed aggregate concrete landing with old metal railing.
The existing back entry was a dated, exposed aggregate concrete landing with an old-fashioned metal railing. The owners wanted to get rid of the cold, industrial look and replace it with timber to create a warmer, more modern entrance that felt like a proper extension of their home.

Construction process: Framing the new timber structure over the existing concrete.
We needed to build a new timber structure directly over the existing concrete slab and stairs. The main challenge was working within tight height restrictions to ensure the new deck sat flush with the sliding door, while also completely concealing the uneven concrete structure underneath.
We framed a new timber subfloor leveled perfectly over the concrete. We installed durable decking boards and built a sturdy custom timber railing to replace the flimsy metal one. To finish the look, we "boxed in" the stairs and the sides of the landing, ensuring every bit of the old grey concrete was hidden behind fresh wood.
The back entrance is now a standout feature rather than just a utility space. The warm, stained timber creates a welcoming vibe that completely hides the old concrete. It's a clean, modern upgrade that adds instant character to the property.
After: A warm, modern timber entryway that conceals all traces of the old concrete.
