The homeowners had a backyard deck that had seen better days. Years of sun and rain had turned the timber grey, dry, and splintery, making it unappealing and potentially unsafe for bare feet. They wanted to restore the wood's natural look and modernize the space without having to completely demolish and rebuild it.
Process: Deep sanding and applying finishing treatments to restore the timber.
The main issue was the depth of the weathering. The timber boards were heavily oxidized (greyed) and dried out. We needed to strip back layers of damage to find the healthy wood underneath without thinning the boards too much. We also needed to update the surrounding privacy screens, which looked dated and blended in too much with the floor.
We performed a deep sand of the entire deck surface and stairs to remove the grey fibers and smooth out splinters. Once the raw timber was revealed, we applied a high-quality, durable decking oil to nourish the wood and seal it against future weather. To add a modern touch, we painted the privacy screens and railings in a dark charcoal grey, creating a sharp, clean contrast against the golden floorboards.
The deck has been completely transformed from a neglected grey patch into a warm, golden outdoor living area. The natural grain of the wood is now the star of the show, and the fresh charcoal paint frames the space perfectly. It's a durable, inviting finish that is ready for years of family BBQs.
